The Prairie in Spring
The Prairie in Spring.
102-2
Flaming clouds athwart the hiil,
Broken ice and flashing rill;
Oozy marge of brimming slough
That the coming drake hath drew.
See his green, inquiring head,
Lifted from the snail-strewn bed!
Mark the gopher’s wooing race
And the high crane circles trace.
There the curlew flutters down
To the stubble, singed and brown.
Whistling sharply straight he
Up the mound that glints and suns.
Far across the dancing plain
View the smoking prairie’s stain,
Where the the grass-fed, marching tre
Trod the swells and leaped the mire.
Thither turn my feet to stroll
Sheltered swale and breezy kuoll!
