San Francisco Redeemed.
6.6
Serenely proud has been thy reign,
Fair mistress of the Golden Gate,
NO Now through through they Great Baptismal Fire,
Predestined to a Great Estate.
Ambassadors from every clime
Have here their flags unfurled;
Thy sceptered reign has pleased us well
And charmed the distant world.
Here argosies from every clime,
From empires great of old,
Have lald their treasures at thy feet
And crowned thee with their gold.
And pilgrims speaking divers tongues,
Taught from their birth to roam,
Have looked and found thee beautiful,
Then loved and called thee home
Their lisping babes, first taught to speak
Thy matchless sounding name,
Kneel here and rev’rently kiss the cross
Where hymns the sorrowing main.
We’ll rear new hearthstones o’er the old.
New shrines and temples ralse,
And round our altars as of yore
Shall sound our hymns of praise
.
We build in faith, we build in hope,
For truth, flashed from above,
In memory of our pioneers,
Behold! we build for love,
No barbaric splendors please thee now,
No flashing gems or crowns of gold,
For thou hast felt the finer’s fire,
And known the sorrows of the soul.
Our Master speaks, we lift the cross,
Our help comes from above;
We bring the robes of purity
And heaven’s crown of love.
No fairest dream or pictured thought-
May know thy great estate
Till thou shalt sit and reign through love
Beside the western gate.
