An “issue” was noticed one day on the pike-
‘Twas seeking for some one to lodge it;
But all politicians displayed their dislike,
And most of them tried hard to dodge it.
‘Twas big as a house and quite fair to the eye-
“But friendless,” they muttered, “so be it,”
And never a one of the leaders would try
To see if he even could see it.
“Unwieldy and rough,” sald the firat that it passed;
“I want something easy to handle;
I’ll look for an issue’ that isn’t so vast,
That’s pleasant to juggle and dandle.”
“One never could trim it,” another one said;
“Twould be to a man like a fetter.
I’ll rig up an issue’ that long has been dead-
When lifeless, they’re much better.
“I’ll make a new issue,’ ” the third one ex- claimed,
“To show I’m resourceful and clever:
I’ll make a live ‘Issue’ that’s properly tamed
And up to no tricks whatsoever.”
And so they went into a local campaign
With “Issues” that no one expected
But as for the “asue” that seemed to be plain,
‘Twas calmly, na ever, neglected.
