Our Stricken City

Our Stricken City
245

You are now among the fallen, our “City of the West,”
You held your head so proudly, you were among the best;
And how we dearly loved you as you overlooked the bay!
You were so strong and beautiful, and what are you to-day?

Our pioneers, a few still live who’ve seen you rise and fall;
We hope they’ll see you rise again before comes their “last call,”
They have seen your people stricken and many rent with pain;
They need no tokens of it-tus im- printed on their brain

We loved you in your beauty, we loved you in your fame,
And though you’er scared and broken, our love for you’s the same
Let courage be our watchword as upon the ruins we gaze:
We’ll build another city and hope for happier days
