The Masquerade
The Masquerade.

It was at the masquerade-
Playful youth and laughing maid,
Woman wan, and bended jade-
I was in a domino,
Masked and draped from head to toe.
Came a warrior to woo,
Iron-gloved and armored, too.
Man of might, if you but knew-?
I was in a domino,
Masked and draped from head to toe.
Came a burgomaster, then,
Hale and heartiest of men.
He was prone to flatter, when-
I was in a domino,
Masked and draped from head to toe.
Then a Romeo came to pace
By my side with gentle grace.
Shapely limbs bespoke his face-
I was in a domino,
Masked and draped from head to toe.
First the priest, and then the fool,
Tried me in their simple school,
Found me perfect in each rule.
I was in a domino,
Masked and draped from head to toe.
All too soon unmasking came.
Ended was the merry game,
And I wished, for very shame,
I was in my domino,
Masked and draped from head to toe.
