The New Battle Cry

THE NEW BATTLE CRY
55313

(A W B, in London Daily Chronicle)
Half a leng, half a leag
Half a leag onward!
Out of Reformers’ paths
Strike the Three Hundred!
Fired by the zeal tu spel boldly if not tu wel
Strike! Bring them down pel-mel,
All the Three Hundred

Forward the Rifle brigade
(Rite’ rong I’m sore agraid),
Is there a man dismaid
Tho in a thousand ways,
Ages have blundered?
Yours not to reason why
“Through” should be lopt, and “sigh”
“Height” and its mother “high”
Still go unsundered

When can our glory fade?
Oh! the wild storm we made,
Changing a language while
All the world wondered!
Honour the change we mako,
All is for Honour’s sake-
Yet those who choose may take
Less than Three Hundred
