The Slave’s Escape To Canada
The Slave’s Escape to Canada
1802
Iam on my way to Canada, that cold and dreary land
The dire effects of slavery I can no longer stand;
My soul is vexed within me vo to think
I am a slave, I am resolved to stilke the blow for freedom of the grave
Chorus:
Oh, righteous Father, wilt thou not pity me
And nld me on to Canada, where coluted men are five
I heard old massa pray last night I heard him pray for me,
That Gool would come with all his might, from Satan set me free:
Se I from Satan would escape and flee the wrath to come
If there’s a friend in human shape, old massa must be one
Chorus:
Oh, old massa while you pray for me
I am doing all that I can do to get my liberty
I have just embarked for yonder shore, where man is man by law
The vessel soon will bear ma o’er to shake the Hon’s paw;
The hounds are baying on my track, old massa just behind
Resolves that he will bring me back before I cross the line
Chorus:
Oh, old massa, don’t think hard of me,
I am doing all that I can do to get my liberty
I am landed safe upon the shore, both soul and body free,
My blood and brains and tears no more will drench old Tennessce:
Hut I behold a scalding tear just starting from my eye
To think my wife, my only friend, a slave must live and die,
Chorus:
Oh, Jear wife, while you grieve for ine,
Forever at the throne of grace I will remember thee
