REASSURED.

In days of good King Theodore strange things did come to pass
For puissant senators grow mild, like little boys at class;
And at King Theodore’s command would leap head first through rings,
Sit up and beg. play dead, and do so many other things!
In days of good King Theodore all signs were wont to fail,
For haughty ice men, fallen were bundled off to fall, low,
And men of high degree about the open door stood, vexed,
To hold communion with the law and wonder what was next.
In days of good King Theodore the evil trust grew meek.
And raised their hands respectfully, beseeching leave to speak,
And sinful men, like little boys, stood waiting all abashed
With pockets turning inside out and tainted checks uncashed.
In days of good King Theodore they scrubbed the star of hope
And made is shine more brilliantly with Teddy’s Square-deal Soap.
And stretched the constitution till that bulwark of the free –
Was big enough to go around and har- bor you and me.
In days of good King Theodore, as through a hundred years.
The ship of state goes sailing on, nor ever swerves on veers,
And men are men and right is right and compasses are lald
To steer a course where freedom lies, and none of us afraid.
