Resurgam!
Resurgam!
393
From ash and desolation
I will arise Imperial, triumphant-on my lips
The hill’s song and the sea’s song, and the mist
Of an eternal pity in my eyes
From ash and desolation I will arise
And o’er my head the singing stars shall tell
The glory of my rising Far and wide
The ancient winds shall bear it, and the sea-
Thou love of mine, thou faithful love of mine!-
Shall thunder at the portals of the world
How I again sit Empress on my hills
Where dream the Poles in crystal silences,
Where Cotopaxi flares in dreadful night,
Where softest breezes tease the silvered bells
Of eager Nippon and eterne Cathay;
Yea, to where drop the waters of the deep
My song shall sound Now men shall soon forget
Karnak and white Pompeii; they shall sing
Only of me, triumphant And from far
The hosts shall hasten homeward to my knees
That bent not in the hour when it seemed
Hell vanquished, God forgot me and my own
Children of mine, be patient! Overhead
The stars are and the splendor At my feet
The sea still sings, and in my shadowed heart
There bides the love of Titans Ye are mine,
Pearls of my breast, my children! Now, to-day,
The dark is, and the sorrow But again
The glory shall return an hundred-fold
And ye shall see me happy Yea, from out
My ash and desolation I will arise,
As from the solemn sorrow of the tomb
Rises the soul!
