To the brave pioneers of the forest or piain
Appeal for assistance came never in vain;
They rose at the tidings, hor questioned of pay;
They mounted their horses and galloped away.
Like a flame in the grass when the pral- ries are dry,
When the autumn winds mingle the dust with the sky,
And fierce as the hurricane driving the flame,
On the trail of the savage they gathered and came.
The red men with carnage were feasted and filled,
Their girdles were decked with the scalps of the killed;
For along the whole border each home was & vold,
And father und mother and chlid were destroyed.
But ah! how their triumphs were turn- ing to fears,
When Sibley dashed up with his brave volunteers;
Live wolves on the prairie they crouch- ed and they cower’d;
Like wheat in the harvest they sunk overpower’d.
You may learn from the monarch with heart like a file
To refuse with a grace-to deny with a smile-
But how rights are are defended, how wrongs are redress’d,
You may learn from the brave pioneer of the West.
