One day not very long ago, there walked in
Gotham town
The shades of two old patriarchs, from heaven
Just come down:
And na they wandered, open mouthed, at all there
was to Bов.
‘Tis sald one touched the other with a look of in.
quiry.
“It seems,” he said, “that history forever shall
repeat,
Behold that handmaid yonder in the cap and apron
neat!
Ah, me, were I but young again and Sarah far
away.
Methinks that Abraham would kiss a handmald
every day.”
“And I observe.” remarked his friend, “the women
that we pass,
Each is a beauty in her way, from matron down
to lass.
I. too, surmise, that were I here in flesh and blood
the dears
Would find King Solomon the same he was tu an
clent years.”
Then as each thought of joys long past and what
enchained their view,
These mighty ones their tactics old were tempted
to renew;
And Aoranam, all gleefully, a modest nursenald
chased.
While Solomon a passer-by delightedly embraced.
Alast alack! the tale is done. No need for me to say,
A cop corralled these sporty shades and ran then
In straightway.
And there, within the station-house, to their in
– tense amaze,
They learned that things had changed a bit since
good old Bible days.
